The BCCI Medical Team at the Centre of Excellence has been examining Shami's recovery and rehab after his right heel surgery. The pacer had recovered from his heel issue.

Shami has been bowling in the Ranji Trophy with the Bengal cricket team. He was also seen in action at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), where was seen bowling and also engaged in extra sessions to build up his run-up.

However, his left knee seemed to swelled up due to an increase joint loading from his workload. The swelling seems to have come from an increase in bowling after a long period of time.

Based on the current situation, the BCCI Medical Team stated that 34-year-old's knee required more time for controlled exposure to bowling in tandem. That's why, he was not deemed fit for consideration for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
